The direct responsibility of a safety officer is to ensure all equipment and personnel are safe and compliant with relevant safety standards and regulations. This role is crucial in creating a safe working environment, which includes overseeing the proper use and maintenance of safety equipment, ensuring that personnel follow safety protocols, and identifying potential hazards in the workplace.

By focusing on the safety of equipment and personnel, the safety officer plays a pivotal role in preventing accidents and injuries. This involves regularly checking that equipment meets safety requirements, providing guidance to employees on safe practices, and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of safety regulations and best practices.

Other responsibilities mentioned, such as managing training sessions, conducting audits, and reporting to management, are indeed important aspects of a safety program but are typically secondary tasks that support the primary responsibility of ensuring safety.
